Social Phobia
Social phobia (also know as social anxiety disorder) is a anxiety disorder which causes sufferers to become extremely anxious about what other people think of them and are highly self conscious, to the point that it significantly impacts upon their lives and their ability to interact with others.
The severity of the condition can vary greatly. Some people become overly anxious in certain situations such as discussions, presentations, social gatherings etc. However in more severe cases, sufferers become extremely anxious in nearly all social situations and greatly impacts upon their everyday life.
Who does it affect?
Social phobia is one of the most common mental health conditions. It is estimated that almost 1 in 10 people suffer from social phobia to some extent. Women are twice as likely as men to be affected and the condition commonly appears during the teenage years. Genetics, and life experiences may contribute to the development of social phobia. Social phobia can have a detrimental effect on many areas of life, including education, work, relationships and even daily living. As a result, sufferers may find it incredibly difficult to make or keep friends and can become very isolated and feel terribly alone.
