Freedom of Choice
The usual treatment and help people generally receive for mental illnesses are a combination of therapy/counselling and medication. When I went to see my doctor (and trust me – I saw quite a few!) that was the usual prescription for me.
Now don’t get me wrong…those things can definitely help! But I believe choice is important. Different things will help different people – no one is the same – therefore not everyone will respond to the same treatment.
When I first got referred to counselling - I found it a very disappointing experience. I had pinned all my hopes on counselling as being my saviour. But I was very disappointed and disillusioned when it did not seem to help me. I then tried anti depressants, anti anxiety medication and other pills... but they just seemed to give me horrible side effects and made me feel even worse. After that I didn’t know where to turn... the two things that were recommended as the best solutions for my mental illness had failed me. Not knowing where to turn next sent me into a even deeper spiral of despair and I felt like there was no hope left. But when I spoke to people, did my own research... I discovered that there was a whole wealth of different things to try...what I found was CHOICE. Choice gave me hope. And hope helped me on my road to recovery...
On the following pages I will be looking at diffrent options and exploring other treatments and ways in which we can help others and ourselves…
