One Thing At a Time...
Quite often, mental illnesses do not occur alone, but co exist with each other. Sometimes one mental illness can trigger another and this inevitably can make the existing condition even worse. My own struggles with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) led to depression…which then led to insomnia, weight loss and self harm.
The spiral of combined mental illnesses can be immensely overwhelming and it may feel like there is no way out. But the key is to deal with each issue one at a time and not to let them all threaten to crush you. As you deal with each one, slowly things will improve and you will notice an overall improvement and change. The progress may be slow and painful, but don’t give up – things can change. Trying to deal with everything at once will only overwhelm you… over the next few pages, I will be exploring some of the related conditions such as insomnia, weight loss and self harm… which can co occur with mental illnesses…
